Falco, Miriam. "Patient, Doctors Encouraged By ALS Trial." CNN Health. CNN, 28 Sept. 2011. Web. 29 Sept. 2011.
This article is about a clinical trial studing ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. In 2010 Ted Harada started experiencing weakening of is legs and running out of breath. At first the doctors thought it was Asthma, but a few months later diagnosed him with ALS. He is now apart of the clinical trial in Atlanta at Emory University. The doctors inject neural stem cells into the lower spine. They told participants that it wouldn't cure the ALS or even benefit them, but it would only help them find out more about the disease. Harada hoped that the injections would help but didnt expect them to. But just 2 weeks after the start of the trial he felt like he was improving. Dr. Feldman, President of the American Neurological Association showed the data of the studies at her annual meeting on Monday. She said, "We have cautious optimism that a few of the patients may have slowed in their progression of lower extremity weakness, and one patient may have improved." And only 2 of the 12 participants in the trial have died. One died of ALS and the other died of a heart attck. Harada is very optimistic that the studies will help other patients and lead to more treatments.
This article is not biased. They are just telling the story of a man who has ALS and is doing a clinical trial. They state facts and tell about how the trial works and how it is going. This a heart touching story. Many people have died of ALS and its awesome that they are getting closer and closer to a cure. I dont know if I would want to do a paper on this topic though because it doesn't interest me enough and I'm not sure how much info i could find on this.

Transgender kids: Painful quest to be who they are
http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/27/health/transgender-kids/index.html?hpt=he_t2
Parker, Madison. "Transgender Kids: Painful quest to be who they are." CNN. CNN, 27 Sept. 2011. Web. 28 Sept. 2011.
Thomas Lobel of Berkeley, California was a 3 year old boy when he learned how to sign. He had a speech impediment called "apraxia." One day he signed to his parents, "I am a girl." His parents just thought that he was just simply confused, but it was something more than that. The parents of this toddler didnt know that their son was born a transgender. Thomas always kept the thought that he was a girl and now at 11 years old he even lives like a girl. She wears dresses and goes by the name Tammy. Her parents have gone through many problems with family and friends because they are saying that they srewed up and peranantly damaged their youngest child by letting Thomas live as a girl. Tammy has started hormone treatments now that she is starting puberty. This treatment is something fairly new in the country. The treatment puts puberty on hold and allows the teen time to choose wheather they want to change their body to the opposite sex or not. Some doctors say that its ok for them to take the pills and that it doesnt harm the body. But others such as Dr. Kenneth Zucker disagree and state that giving the child the treatment before 13 is too early. He says you have to be careful because they desires to be of the opposite sex could change a few years later. He says to just be happy and be you and to not change for anyone else.
This article can be a very good topic for an argumentative paper , but i dont know how much information i would be able to find about it. And also unsure of what side to take. This article is very unbiased. just talks about the life of a transgender and the troubles she has to go through to be who she really is. The part where it talks about the statistics and Dr. Zucker's opinion gets a little bit biased but thats about it.

Amy Winehouse and the 27 Club
http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2011/07/23/amy-winehouse-and-the-curse-of-27-2/
On a Saturday afternoon in London, Winehouse was found dead in her home.
It could be destiny, fate, or whatever. But Amy Winehouse has now joined the 27 club along with Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Robert Johnson, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
It seems that rockstars who died at the age of 27 packed in a lot of living in a lottle amount of time. It was almost as if they knew that their time was coming.
Someone tweeted and said that she died of drugs abuse. But no one knows yet the cause of her death. They think that drugs may have shortened her life, but whatever it may have been, she left too soon.
I find this topic about this superstition kind of creepy and mysterical. It is so weird how all these famous singers died at the age of 27. Its so sad that all of these talented stars barely got a chance at life. Did Amy Winehouse die to be another member of this club?

Should A Prostitute Be Given A Chance At A Clean Slate?
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/21/nyregion/snared-into-prostitution-at-13-and-now-given-a-chance-for-a-clean-legal-slate.html?_r=1&ref=prostitution
She was just 13 and going into the eighth grade. She came to be known as Leni Johnson by police in the Bronx. She started standing on sidewalks waiting for men to show up in their cars with money for her sexual favors.
She used to bag groceries for tips, wearing her catholic middle school uniform. In the summer of 2001, a 21 year old man payed her less then she made at the supermarket. He gave her a skimpy little outfit to wear and told her, ‘Just stand right there. When the car pulls up, just tell them, “You want to have a good time?” You tell them the price, then you go and do whatever.’
Johnson who is now 22, would be sold to men for the next eight years. She would be beaten with a stick for even looking at another pimp.
On Wednesday, she will be a part of a "vital revolution" in New York City. Her lawyers and prosecutors in the Bronx will be both asking for her charges of prostitution to be dismissed since when she was charged, she wasn't of age of consent.
In August of 2010, a law took effect stating that children who perform sex acts for money are victims rather than criminals and shouldn't have to deal with the punishments. The state have made more reforms to help these troubled teens.
Johnson now lives in Georgia and works at a waffle house. She has a daughter who is three that lives with her and a son, who is older, that lives with his grandma. Johnson is hoping to get a job at the supermarket, but one of the questions asked if she was ever convicted.
On Wednesday, her three convictions will be adressed. But her pimp gave her false identification, saying that she 18.
In 2008, she found out that she was pregnant with a girl which brought the end of her prostitution. She didn't want her child to grow up with that kind of environment.
This article was very touching. I hope that her Convictions are released. She was young and struggling to make money. I'm not going to say that she didn't know right from wrong because she was old enough to know better, but everyone deserves a second chance. This article is probably few among many about prostitution. You hear a lot about it in cities and in shows such as "Cops." It could be a good topic if you were doing a paper about problems in the U.S. Well I hope that You guys take a chance to read the whole article, beacuse it really interested me.

Humanitarian Aid for Rape Victims
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/08/opinion/humanitarian-aid-for-rape-victims.html?_r=1&ref=abortion
"Humanitarian Aid for Rape Victims: Editorial." The New York Times. 7 Sept. 2011. The New York Times Company. Web. 14 Sept. 2011.
In this Article, President Obama ordered for the "global gag rule" to be lifted on his third day in office. This rule didn't allow federal money to go to family planning that performed abortions or even recommended it. But Mr. Obama did leave a policy stand that had similar restrictions about not being able to recommend abortion and not allowing the use of foreign aid money for the medical treament. Even in cases of rape, to save a women's life, or in war zones. This policy is not really enforced. It is similar to one that was enacted in 1973, its just more restrictive. That act would be the Helms ammendment. The Helms ammendment "bans using foreign aid money to pay for the performance of abortion as a method of family planning or to motivate or coerce any person to practice abortions."
Providing abortions to rape victims is not "a method of family planning." And neither is letting them know about their right to choose to have an abortion. Although in 2008, there was a misinterpretation of the Helms ammendment that was formalized and is still enforced today.A group led by Global Justice Center and Norway, called to have the policy lifted as it applies to those subject to rape. This group found that the interpretation of the Helms ammendment that we have now goes against Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. This "entitles all victims of armed conflict — including those brutalized by rape — to complete and non-discriminatory medical treatment." Obama doesn't want to upset the antiabortion extremists by changing this policy, but he has to abide by his pledge to the Geneva convention. Even in one of the antiabortion bills that passed throught the house this year had exceptions for rape, saving a women's life, and in cases of incest.
This Article is not to biased until the end. It is leaning towards antiabortion and talks about how using abortion is not a proper form of family planning.

Teen Girls' Stories of Sex Trafficking in U.S.
http://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story?id=1596778&page=1
"Teen Girls' Stories of Sex Trafficking in U.S." ABC News/Primetime. ABC Primetime, 2006. Web. 13 Sept. 2011.
"Teen Girls' Stories of Sex Trafficking in U.S." is an article about sex trafficking of teen girls in the United States. Debbie and Miya are both teen girls who have been lured into the "seamy world of sex trafficking." These girls are just two out of the thousands of young girls living in America that have been abducted or lured into sex trafficking.
"While many Americans have heard of human trafficking in other parts of the world -- Thailand, Cambodia, Latin America and eastern Europe, for example -- few people know it happens here in the United States. The FBI estimates that well over 100,000 children and young women are trafficked in America today. They range in age from 9 to 19, with the average age being 11."
Debbie, was 15 when she was abducted from her own driveway. She was waiting for her friend Bianca to arrive. When Bianca arrived, she pulled up in a cadillac with two men, Mark and Matthew. The men made Bianca shove her friend into the vehicle and tie her up and threatened to shoot Bianca if she didnt obey. Debbie was taken to an apartment 25 miles away from her home. There she was treated like a dog and subject to various abuses. She was gang raped and forced to have sex with over 50 men and thats not including the gang rapers who had sex with her on a periodic basis. Her "pimp" broke her down until he gained complete control over her.
Miya, a 19 year old, was working at the mall when she was lured into sex trafficking. She was approached by a young women and nicely dressed man. They said that they were modeling agents looking for new models. They asked her to go back to California with them so they could do more photo shoots at their office and she agreed. They gave her a makeover which she thought was for the photo shoot and had no idea that it would be for a much more "insidious reason." Miya was forced to work as a prostitute.
They both were reunited with their families thanks to the help of law enforcement and having the nerve to endure such harsh conditions. The man who lured Miya was charged with pimping and pandering in connection to the young girl he was traveling with. The people who took Debbie were cherged with kidnapping and sexual assault.
This article is not biased. It is telling the stories of two young girls who were lured into sex trafficking. For as common as its becoming, its hard to believe that we hardly hear about it. This article would be a very good one to use if you wanted to do your paper on underlying problems in the U.S.
