Parker, Madison. "Transgender Kids: Painful quest to be who they are." CNN. CNN, 27 Sept. 2011. Web. 28 Sept. 2011.
Thomas Lobel of Berkeley, California was a 3 year old boy when he learned how to sign. He had a speech impediment called "apraxia." One day he signed to his parents, "I am a girl." His parents just thought that he was just simply confused, but it was something more than that. The parents of this toddler didnt know that their son was born a transgender. Thomas always kept the thought that he was a girl and now at 11 years old he even lives like a girl. She wears dresses and goes by the name Tammy. Her parents have gone through many problems with family and friends because they are saying that they srewed up and peranantly damaged their youngest child by letting Thomas live as a girl. Tammy has started hormone treatments now that she is starting puberty. This treatment is something fairly new in the country. The treatment puts puberty on hold and allows the teen time to choose wheather they want to change their body to the opposite sex or not. Some doctors say that its ok for them to take the pills and that it doesnt harm the body. But others such as Dr. Kenneth Zucker disagree and state that giving the child the treatment before 13 is too early. He says you have to be careful because they desires to be of the opposite sex could change a few years later. He says to just be happy and be you and to not change for anyone else.
This article can be a very good topic for an argumentative paper , but i dont know how much information i would be able to find about it. And also unsure of what side to take. This article is very unbiased. just talks about the life of a transgender and the troubles she has to go through to be who she really is. The part where it talks about the statistics and Dr. Zucker's opinion gets a little bit biased but thats about it.
I also think there isn't too much out there on transgender situations right now. But if there was, it would definitely be a controversial topic and would have been something to look into.
