WHAT I WANT TO USE IN MY RESEARCH PAPER FROM PREVIOUS POSTS ABOUT SEX TRAFFICKING!

"While many Americans have heard of human trafficking in other parts of the world -- Thailand, Cambodia, Latin America and eastern Europe, for example -- few people know it happens here in the United States. The FBI estimates that well over 100,000 children and young women are trafficked in America today. They range in age from 9 to 19, with the average age being 11."
---I want to use this quote because many dont believe that sex trafficking occurs in the U.S. and it help supports the existence of this teribble act.

Debbie, was 15 when she was abducted from her own driveway. She was waiting for her friend Bianca to arrive. When Bianca arrived, she pulled up in a cadillac with two men, Mark and Matthew. The men made Bianca shove her friend into the vehicle and tie her up and threatened to shoot Bianca if she didnt obey. Debbie was taken to an apartment 25 miles away from her home. There she was treated like a dog and subject to various abuses. She was gang raped and forced to have sex with over 50 men and thats not including the gang rapers who had sex with her on a periodic basis. Her "pimp" broke her down until he gained complete control over her.

Miya, a 19 year old, was working at the mall when she was lured into sex trafficking. She was approached by a young women and nicely dressed man. They said that they were modeling agents looking for new models. They asked her to go back to California with them so they could do more photo shoots at their office and she agreed. They gave her a makeover which she thought was for the photo shoot and had no idea that it would be for a much more "insidious reason." Miya was forced to work as a prostitute.

They both were reunited with their families thanks to the help of law enforcement and having the nerve to endure such harsh conditions. The man who lured Miya was charged with pimping and pandering in connection to the young girl he was traveling with. The people who took Debbie were chaged with kidnapping and sexual assault.
---I would like to use this because it is the summary of two girls who were victims of sex trafficking and it kind of tells bits and pieces of their stories.

When we hear the words "sex trafficking," as Americans we immediately think of women and children overseas who are being forced into the sex trade or who are brought into the United States for the purpose of sexual exploitation. We don't usually think closer to home — Americans trafficked by Americans. But I want you to think about young women and even girls that you have seen late at night when you come home from work or a social event. Maybe you have seen them in the streets in short dresses and spike heels. You turn your heads to look away. We do not look at the faces of these young women and girls who are forced to be out in the street. Maybe we think this is what they want to do or they wouldn't be out there. Maybe it is easier to believe that it is an empowering choice they have than face the harsh reality of child sexual abuse, physical and mental abuse, and the pimps that prey on the young women and girls.
---this also shows that sextrafficking isnt only in foreign countries, that it happens in America and by Americans.

Wyndham Hotels to prevent child sex trafficking at their properties, after a sex trafficking ring selling girls as young as 14 was discovered in a Wyndham hotel in California. Now, another sex trafficking ring has been busted using Wyndham properties near Washington, DC. Will this latest scandal finally inspire the company finally do the right thing?
Virginia resident and MS-13 gang member Alonso Bruno Cornejo Ormeno was recently indicted for trafficking girls for sex at a Super 8 hotel -- a Wyndham property -- in Manassas, Virginia. At least one of the girls was 15 when she was sold, and Ormeno advertised her as a "high school girl" and "fresh out of the box." According to the indictment, Ormeno rented a room at the Super 8 where he sold sex acts with a number of girls and women for $50 each. He told an informant his business was booming, and his cell phone was ringing off the hook. Six or seven clients a day would stream in and out of the room, but no one at the hotel reported it.

Sex Slaves of West 43rd Street

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/press_box/2004/01/sex_slaves_of_west_43rd_street.html

Shafer, Jack. "Sex Slaves of West 43rd Street." Slate. The State Group, LLC, 2011. Web. October 30, 2011.
In this article, the author is further investigating an Article in the New York Times. The article "Girls Next Door," by Peter Landesman is kind of being shot down by Shafer. He says that he believes that sex slavery does exist because of a vivid description given by Landesman, but does not give any more praise to him. Instead he is saying how the facts that are given in his article are not verfiable or very well supported. They are vague, anecdotal, anonymous, suspicious, and slippery. Shafer re analyzes Landesmans article and picks out the flaws and corrects them with more verifiable information.
This article didnt really help me any in my focus topic. but it does give some good facts and numbers that i could possibly use. the authors intended audience was probably New York Times readers. His intention was to proove that Landesman's information was false.

Sex Slaves, Human Trafficking... In America?

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/22083762/ns/today-today_people/t/sex-slaves-human-trafficking-america/

Kahng, Grace. "Sex Slaves, Human Trafficking... In America?" Today People. 2007. Web. October 22, 2011.

Katya was a foreign exchange university student. In the spring of 2004, her and her friend Lena were looking forward to their jobs that they had gotten for the summer in Virginia Beach, Va. After they arrived at the airport from their native country of Ukraine, they were happy that the were greeted by two men who spoke their russian language. The two men, Alex Maksimenko and Michael Aronov, told the girls that they would now be going to Detroit because their jobs were reassigned. There they would be waitresses and work on shaping up their English skills. The girls had no idea that they were about to get on a flight that would change their lives forever. Once they arrived at the hotel in detroit, they sat them down and took their passports and papers, said that they owe the men big time for taking them there  and told them that they would be working in a strip club called "Cheetahs" and threw them the stripper outfits. Over the next year, the girls went through  mental, physical, and sexual abuse and were forced to work the 12 hour shifts at the mens' club in Detroit. There are an estimated 17,000 women and girls who are forced into the sex industry. These womens and girls are only thought about as dollars and cents for this sex industry is all about big money. In 2005, the girls escaped and were taken to the FBI and ICE. The two men were arrested and are serving their time in Federal prison. Katya knows that the men are imprisoned, but she says that she will always live with fear.
This story was easy to connect to on an emotional level. It allows for so many people to feel sorry for the girls, and to think that it happens in our very own country? The fact that it happens to foreign exchange students who come here to get a good education makes me even more sick. Either way its not right and I am glad that the media is not hiding this, but instead sharing it with the people of our country. Many people probsbly don't realize how widespread sex trafficking is becoming and just like these two girls, dont think that it would ever happen to them. I keep finding this topic more and more interesting as I continue to research it and hopefully it interests you as well.

Second Gang Busted for Child Sex Trafficking at Wyndham Hotel

http://news.change.org/stories/second-gang-busted-for-child-sex-trafficking-at-wyndham-hotel

Kloer, Amanda. Second Gang Busted for Child Sex Trafficking at Wyndham Hotel. Change.org Inc., 2011. Web. 16 October 2011.

In this article, Tim Rosmer, from San Diego started a campaign asking Wyndham hotels to prevent child sex trafficking on their properties. There have been two cases of child sex trafficking at their hotels. One of them being in California and the other in Washington D.C. This article also tells about a gang memeber that was in the sex trafficking trade and he told reporters about how he ran his business out of a motel room at the Super 8 Motel and he said that he was having as many as 6 or 7 clients daily that would come in and out of the room. One of the girls that gang member Alonso Bruno Cornejo Ormeno sold was only 15. This is the second time that something like this has been busted. There were also other hotels used for something similar in the San Diego area by some Crips. Some think that this could start  a pattern at the Wyndham Hotels. Rosner started a campaign that now has about 500 supporters. The campaign is asking them to sign an ECPAT Code of Conduct to prevent the sex trafficking of children. I think that the author's inteded audience is the public. they are  trying to get them to join the campaign. The article is unbiased, they are just stating facts and giving a little insight on the whole scandal. This article could be helpful in my research i do believe.

Enslaved in America: Sex Trafficking in the United States

http://www.womensfundingnetwork.org/resource/past-articles/enslaved-in-america-sex-trafficking-in-the-united-states

Frundt, Tina. Enslaved in America: Sex Trafficking in the United States. Womens Funding Program. 2011. Web. 15 October 2011.

This article is about Sex trafficking in the U.S. The author starts out by trying to connect to them by getting them to open their minds to the whole idea of girls and young women being forced into the sex trade. She then goes into a story about her experience with the world of sex trafficking. She was forced into prostitution when she was only fourteen years of age. She moved away to Cleveland, Ohio with a guy who she trusted and could talk to about anything. He listened to everything she had to say and told her things like how mature she was for her age and how well she understood him compared to everyone else his age. All of this was just a scheme. He was really just getting into her brain so he could begin to manipulate her. Thats how he got her away from her family and made her apart of his. His "family" consisted of three other girls who must have also fell for his trick of manipulation. The author's story is really sad and so real. She tells about how she was raped and abused. While the author tells her story, she also states many facts about this trade. She talks about the pimps and their tool: the media.
The author's intention of this article is to spread the word about this problem and to get more people to join anti-sex trafficking groups to stop this horrible thing, The article is biased and leads toward anti-sextrafficking. But there obviously wouldnt be anyone talking good about the sex trade... or at least i hope not. This article really grasped my attention and i think it would probably more interesting to girls rather than guys just because the victins of these crimes are all mainly female. But hey i guess it could interest a guy too, you never know.

Reflection Blog

Out of all my posts so far, my favorite would have to be the one about the two young girls that were lured into sex trafficking. It was such a sad and touching story. They had so much strength to go through what they did. It really did interest me and I think I might continue to do more posts that are similar. My least favorite would probably the post about the Humanitarian Aid for Rape Victims.. it was such a long and boring article. although it did have a good point so i'm glad i did it. The post about the 27 Club and Amy Winehouse I found pointless.  i woudnt ever really look into it more like i would the other topics i posted on.

Patient, doctors encouraged by ALS trial

http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/28/health/early-als-trial-results-encouraging/index.html?hpt=he_c2

Falco, Miriam. "Patient, Doctors Encouraged By ALS Trial." CNN Health. CNN, 28 Sept. 2011. Web. 29 Sept. 2011.

This article is about a clinical trial studing ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. In 2010 Ted Harada started experiencing weakening of is legs and running out of breath. At first the doctors thought it was Asthma, but a few months later diagnosed him with ALS. He is now apart of the clinical trial in Atlanta at Emory University. The doctors inject neural stem cells into the lower spine. They told participants that it wouldn't cure the ALS or even benefit them, but it would only help them find out more about the disease. Harada hoped that the injections would help but didnt expect them to. But just 2 weeks after the start of the trial he felt like he was improving. Dr. Feldman, President of the American Neurological Association showed the data of the studies at her annual meeting on Monday. She said, "We have cautious optimism that a few of the patients may have slowed in their progression of lower extremity weakness, and one patient may have improved." And only 2 of the 12 participants in the trial have died. One died of ALS and the other died of a heart attck. Harada is very optimistic that the studies will help other patients and lead to more treatments.
This article is not biased. They are just telling the story of a man who has ALS and is doing a clinical trial. They state facts and tell about how the trial works and how it is going. This a heart touching story. Many people have died of ALS and its awesome that they are getting closer and closer to a cure. I dont know if I would want to do a paper on this topic though because it doesn't interest me enough and I'm not sure how much info i could find on this.

Transgender kids: Painful quest to be who they are

http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/27/health/transgender-kids/index.html?hpt=he_t2

Parker, Madison. "Transgender Kids: Painful quest to be who they are." CNN. CNN, 27 Sept. 2011. Web. 28 Sept. 2011.

Thomas Lobel of Berkeley, California was a 3 year old boy when he learned how to sign. He had a speech impediment called "apraxia." One day he signed to his parents, "I am a girl." His parents just thought that he was just simply confused, but it was something more than that. The parents of this toddler didnt know that their son was born a transgender. Thomas always kept the thought that he was a girl and now at 11 years old he even lives like a girl. She wears dresses and goes by the name Tammy. Her parents have gone through many problems with family and friends because they are saying that they srewed up and peranantly damaged their youngest child by letting Thomas live as a girl. Tammy has started hormone treatments now that she is starting puberty. This treatment is something fairly new in the country. The treatment puts puberty on hold and allows the teen time to choose wheather they want to change their body to the opposite sex or not. Some doctors say that its ok for them to take the pills and that it doesnt harm the body. But others such as Dr. Kenneth Zucker disagree and state that giving the child the treatment before 13 is too early. He says you have to be careful because they desires to be of the opposite sex could change a few years later. He says to just be happy and be you and to not change for anyone else.
This article can be a very good topic for an argumentative paper , but i dont know how much information i would be able to find about it. And also unsure of what side to take. This article is very unbiased. just talks about the life of a transgender and the troubles she has to go through to be who she really is. The part where it talks about the statistics and Dr. Zucker's opinion gets a little bit biased but thats about it.

Amy Winehouse and the 27 Club

http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2011/07/23/amy-winehouse-and-the-curse-of-27-2/

Farley, Christopher J. "Amy Winehouse and the 27 Club." The Wall Street Journal. SPEAKEASY, 23 July 2011. Web. 21 Sept. 2011.

On a Saturday afternoon in London, Winehouse was found dead in her home.
It could be destiny, fate, or whatever. But Amy Winehouse has now joined the 27 club along with Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Robert Johnson, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
It seems that rockstars who died at the age of 27 packed in a lot of living in a lottle amount of time. It was almost as if they knew that their time was coming.
Someone tweeted and said that she died of drugs abuse. But no one knows yet the cause of her death. They think that drugs may have shortened her life, but whatever it may have been, she left too soon.

I find this topic about this superstition kind of creepy and mysterical. It is so weird how all these famous singers died at the age of 27. Its so sad that all of these talented stars barely got a chance at life. Did Amy Winehouse die to be another member of this club?

Should A Prostitute Be Given A Chance At A Clean Slate?

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/21/nyregion/snared-into-prostitution-at-13-and-now-given-a-chance-for-a-clean-legal-slate.html?_r=1&ref=prostitution

Dywer, Jim. "Snared Into Prostitution at 13, and Now Given a Chance for a Clean Legal Slate." New York Times. New York Times Company, 20 Sept. 2011. Web. 21 Sept. 2011.

She was just 13 and going into the eighth grade. She came to be known as Leni Johnson by police in the Bronx. She started standing on sidewalks waiting for men to show up in their cars with money for her sexual favors.
She used to bag groceries for tips, wearing her catholic middle school uniform. In the summer of 2001, a 21 year old man payed her less then she made at the supermarket. He gave her a skimpy little outfit to wear and told her, ‘Just stand right there. When the car pulls up, just tell them, “You want to have a good time?” You tell them the price, then you go and do whatever.’
Johnson who is now 22, would be sold to men for the next eight years. She would be beaten with a stick for even looking at another pimp.
On Wednesday, she will be a part of a "vital revolution" in New York City. Her lawyers and prosecutors in the Bronx will be both asking for her charges of prostitution to be dismissed since when she was charged, she wasn't of age of consent.
In August of 2010, a law took effect stating that children who perform sex acts for money are victims rather than criminals and shouldn't have to deal with the punishments. The state have made more reforms to help these troubled teens.
Johnson now lives in Georgia and works at a waffle house. She has a daughter who is three that lives with her and a son, who is older, that lives with his grandma. Johnson is hoping to get a job at the supermarket, but one of the questions asked if she was ever convicted.
On Wednesday, her three convictions will be adressed. But her pimp gave her false identification, saying that she 18.
In 2008, she found out that she was pregnant with a girl which brought the end of her prostitution. She didn't want her child to grow up with that kind of environment.

This article was very touching. I hope that her Convictions are released. She was young and struggling to make money. I'm not going to say that she didn't know right from wrong because she was old enough to know better, but everyone deserves a second chance. This article is probably few among many about prostitution. You hear a lot about it in cities and in shows such as "Cops." It could be a good topic if you were doing a paper about problems in the U.S. Well I hope that You guys take a chance to read the whole article, beacuse it really interested me.

Humanitarian Aid for Rape Victims

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/08/opinion/humanitarian-aid-for-rape-victims.html?_r=1&ref=abortion

"Humanitarian Aid for Rape Victims: Editorial." The New York Times. 7 Sept. 2011. The New York Times Company. Web. 14 Sept. 2011.

In this Article, President Obama ordered for the "global gag rule" to be lifted on his third day in office. This rule didn't allow federal money to go to family planning that performed abortions or even recommended it. But Mr. Obama did leave a policy stand that had similar restrictions about not being able to recommend abortion and not allowing the use of foreign aid money for the medical treament. Even in cases of rape, to save a women's life, or in war zones. This policy is not really enforced. It is similar to one that was enacted in 1973, its just more restrictive. That act would be the Helms ammendment. The Helms ammendment "bans using foreign aid money to pay for the performance of abortion as a method of family planning or to motivate or coerce any person to practice abortions."
Providing abortions to rape victims is not "a method of family planning." And neither is letting them know about their right to choose to have an abortion. Although in 2008, there was a misinterpretation of the Helms ammendment that was formalized and is still enforced today.A group led by Global Justice Center and Norway, called to have the policy lifted as it applies to those subject to rape. This group found that the interpretation of the Helms ammendment that we have now goes against Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. This "entitles all victims of armed conflict — including those brutalized by rape — to complete and non-discriminatory medical treatment." Obama doesn't want to upset the antiabortion extremists by changing this policy, but he has to abide by his pledge to the Geneva convention. Even in one of the antiabortion bills that passed throught the house this year had exceptions for rape, saving a women's life, and in cases of incest.

This Article is not to biased until the end. It is leaning towards antiabortion and talks about how using abortion is not a proper form of family planning.

Teen Girls' Stories of Sex Trafficking in U.S.

http://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story?id=1596778&page=1

"Teen Girls' Stories of Sex Trafficking in U.S." ABC News/Primetime. ABC Primetime, 2006. Web. 13 Sept. 2011.

"Teen Girls' Stories of Sex Trafficking in U.S." is an article about sex trafficking of teen girls in the United States. Debbie and Miya are both teen girls who have been lured into the "seamy world of sex trafficking." These girls are just two out of the thousands of young girls living in America that have been abducted or lured into sex trafficking.

Debbie, was 15 when she was abducted from her own driveway. She was waiting for her friend Bianca to arrive. The man who lured Miya was charged with pimping and pandering in connection to the young girl he was traveling with. The people who took Debbie were cherged with kidnapping and sexual assault.

This article is not biased. It is telling the stories of two young girls who were lured into sex trafficking. For as common as its becoming, its hard to believe that we hardly hear about it. This article would be a very good one to use if you wanted to do your paper on underlying problems in the U.S.
